The Africa Green Building Summit (AGBS 2025), hosted by the Botswana Green Building Council in collaboration with the World Green Building Council Africa Regional Network, was held in Gaborone, Botswana from June 10–13, 2025.
With the theme “Building Africa’s Resilience through a Green Built Environment: Advancing Climate Action towards Net Zero Emissions,” this landmark event brought together leading voices from across the continent to discuss sustainable building, climate action, and inclusive growth.
The summit drew a wide array of participants from Green Building Councils from across Africa, Government officials and ministers, Youth innovators and climate champions, and Industry leaders, development partners, and financiers.
Special attention was given to youth voices and women leaders, reinforcing the idea that sustainability must be inclusive to be effective.
The Africa Green Building Summit was more than a conference; it was a strategic platform. The key objectives were:
-
-
To create a unified and professional brand identity for the summit.
-
To increase visibility of green building efforts across Africa.
-
To promote key themes such as Sustainability, Green Building Innovations, Climate Resilience, and Green Finance.
Two major competitions were launched in the lead-up to the event:
-
The Youth Innovation Challenge, spotlighting young African problem-solvers.
-
A Call for Research Abstracts, inviting academia to contribute ideas on sustainable development and design.
These competitions culminated in a Pre-Summit Innovation Workshop on May 30, setting the tone for the main summit.
The summit itself featured diverse panel discussions, workshops, and keynotes, covering:
-
Policy and Governance for a just transition
-
Decarbonization and Energy Efficiency in buildings
-
Green Finance opportunities
-
Circular Economy and Sustainable Urban Planning
A highlight was the Green Finance Golf Day on June 13 — a creative space where decision-makers connected around financing sustainable infrastructure.
One of the major tools introduced was the WorldGBC NDC Scorecard, designed to help governments integrate green building into national climate commitments (NDCs).
Speakers repeatedly emphasized the importance of:
-
Integrating sustainability with health, equity, and circularity
-
Building capacity in youth and women
-
Collaborative, multi-sectoral action across finance, policy, construction, and community
At the Ethiopian Green Building Council (EtGBC), we recognize events like AGBS 2025 as vital opportunities for regional synergy. We share Botswana GBC’s commitment to:
-
Empower youth innovators and women leaders
-
Align green building policies with national and continental climate strategies
-
Promote knowledge sharing and certification to accelerate market transformation
We are proud to be part of the growing momentum in Africa’s green building sector and stand ready to support collective progress toward net-zero emissions and climate-resilient infrastructure.
